If you ask most foreigners what sport Koreans love, the instinctive answer is soccer. The correct answer is 야구 (yagu, baseball). The KBO 리그 (Korea Baseball Organization Liga) averages over 5 million total spectators per season — among the highest of any baseball league outside MLB. On warm summer evenings, stadiums across the country fill with fans wearing team 유니폼 (uniforms), following 응원단 (cheer squads) who conduct the entire crowd through batter-specific songs and synchronized hand movements. The quality of play has produced a steady stream of MLB stars. The tickets cost about the same as a bowl of 냉면 (naengmyeon, cold noodles). It is one of Korea's great underrated cultural experiences.

Each team has an 응원단장 (cheer leader, literally "cheering corps leader") who stands on a raised platform facing the crowd — not the field — and conducts thousands of fans through coordinated cheering. Every batter in the lineup has their own 응원가 (cheering song) — a short, catchy melody specific to that player, which the entire home crowd sings in unison as soon as he comes to bat. Individual players' songs often become minor pop culture moments.

추임새 (percussion), 응원봉 (thundersticks, inflatable noise-makers), and occasional balloon releases punctuate key moments. The 치어리더 (cheerleaders) are a formal, professional part of the game presentation — performing during breaks and leading crowd energy.

The food is also notably different from most stadiums. KBO fans eat 치킨 (fried chicken) and 맥주 (beer) as a near-universal pairing — 치맥 (chimaek) being a general Korean cultural practice adapted perfectly to stadium settings.
