Two Korean companies control nearly three-quarters of the world's memory chip supply. Here's how that happened — and why it matters.

Every time you use a smartphone, stream a video, open a laptop, or interact with an AI system, you are almost certainly using Korean technology. Not because Korea makes the device — though it might — but because the memory chips inside it were almost certainly made in Korea. South Korea controls approximately 73% of the global DRAM memory market and approximately 50% of the global NAND flash storage market. These are not niche products. They are the foundational components of every computing device on earth.


반도체란 무엇인가 (What Semiconductors Are)

Semiconductors are materials that conduct electricity under certain conditions — the physical basis for all modern electronics. In common usage, "semiconductors" refers to the integrated circuits — chips — built from these materials.

There are two broad categories relevant to Korea's dominance:

메모리 반도체 (Memory semiconductors): Chips that store data. DRAM (Dynamic Random Access Memory) is the working memory of computing devices — fast, volatile, used while a device is running. NAND flash is storage memory — slower, non-volatile, used for permanent storage in phones, SSDs, and USB drives.

시스템 반도체 (Logic/system semiconductors): Chips that process data — CPUs, GPUs, mobile processors, AI accelerators. Korea is strong in memory but less dominant in logic chips, where TSMC (Taiwan) and Intel (US) lead.

Korea's specific dominance is in memory. And memory is everywhere.

In 1983, Samsung Electronics — then primarily a consumer electronics company — announced it would enter the semiconductor business. The decision was made by chairman 이병철 (Lee Byung-chul) personally, against the advice of most of his executives and the Korean government, which considered the move premature.

Samsung produced its first 64K DRAM chip in 1983. By 1992, it had become the world's largest DRAM producer — surpassing Japanese companies that had dominated the market through the 1980s. By 2023, Samsung controlled approximately 43% of the global DRAM market.

The strategy that got Samsung there: aggressive investment through downturns. When semiconductor prices fall — as they do cyclically — most companies cut investment. Samsung historically maintained or increased capital expenditure, emerging from downturns with newer equipment and larger market share than competitors who had pulled back.

SK하이닉스 (SK Hynix) — formerly Hyundai Electronics, then Hynix Semiconductor — controls approximately 30% of the global DRAM market. Combined with Samsung's 43%, the two Korean companies control 73% of global DRAM supply.

SK Hynix made one of the most consequential acquisitions in semiconductor history in 2021: it purchased Intel's NAND flash business (인텔 낸드 사업부) for $9 billion, significantly expanding its position in storage memory.

HBM — AI 시대의 핵심 (HBM: The AI Era's Critical Component)

HBM (High Bandwidth Memory) is a specialized form of DRAM designed for AI accelerators — particularly the GPUs used to train large language models. As AI computing demand has exploded, HBM has become one of the most sought-after components in the global technology supply chain.

SK Hynix was first to market with HBM3 and HBM3E — the generations required by NVIDIA's H100 and H200 AI GPUs. As of 2024, SK Hynix supplies approximately 50% of NVIDIA's HBM requirements, with Samsung supplying most of the remainder. This position — at the intersection of Korean semiconductor capability and global AI infrastructure investment — has made HBM one of the most strategically significant products in Korean economic history.

Tip — 반도체와 한국 경제 (Semiconductors and the Korean economy): Semiconductors account for approximately 20% of Korea's total exports — the single largest category by a significant margin. When DRAM prices fall by 30%, as they did in 2022–2023, Korea's trade balance deteriorates measurably and GDP growth slows. When prices recover, as they did in late 2023 and 2024 driven by AI demand, the Korean economy recovers with them. No other major economy has this degree of dependence on a single product category.

Samsung's primary semiconductor fabrication facilities are located in 기흥 (Giheung) and 화성 (Hwaseong) in Gyeonggi Province, south of Seoul, and 평택 (Pyeongtaek) — where Samsung has invested over $100 billion in what is the world's largest semiconductor fabrication complex by floor area.

SK Hynix operates primarily from 이천 (Icheon) and 청주 (Cheongju), with a major new fabrication complex under construction in 용인 (Yongin) — a $90+ billion investment that will be one of the largest semiconductor clusters in the world when complete.

The Korean government designated a 반도체 클러스터 (semiconductor cluster) zone in 용인 in 2023, planning to concentrate fabrication, equipment, materials, and research companies in a single geographic area to reduce supply chain vulnerability.


도전과 경쟁 (Challenges and Competition)

중국의 추격 (China's rise): China has invested hundreds of billions of dollars in semiconductor self-sufficiency through companies including YMTC (NAND flash) and CXMT (DRAM). US export controls implemented from 2022 onward have significantly restricted China's access to advanced manufacturing equipment — providing temporary relief for Korean producers, but China's long-term ambition has not diminished.

TSMC와 시스템 반도체 (TSMC and logic chips): Samsung's foundry business — manufacturing chips designed by other companies — competes directly with TSMC (Taiwan). Samsung has consistently trailed TSMC in advanced logic process technology, and closing this gap is a stated strategic priority. Samsung's 3nm GAA (Gate-All-Around) process launched in 2022, but yield rates and customer adoption have lagged TSMC's equivalent offering.

미국의 반도체 법 (US CHIPS Act): The US Semiconductor and Science Act of 2022 provided $52 billion in subsidies for semiconductor manufacturing in the United States, with conditions restricting recipients from expanding advanced manufacturing in China. Both Samsung and SK Hynix are building US fabrication facilities — Samsung in Taylor, Texas and SK Hynix in Purdue, Indiana — partly in response to customer and government pressure to diversify supply chains.
