Bank Accounts (은행 계좌) in Korea: Kakao Bank & Big Four

Opening a bank account in Korea used to require an in-person visit, a stack of documents, and patience. Now you can do it from your phone in 10 minutes — if you know which bank to use.

A Korean bank account is not optional for anyone living in Korea. Your salary is paid into it. Your health insurance is billed from it. Your landlord's deposit goes through it. Utility bills, transit top-ups, online shopping — the Korean financial system assumes you have one. Getting one set up early is the single most impactful financial step you can take after arriving.

The good news: it's considerably easier than it used to be. The better news: one option — 카카오뱅크 (Kakao Bank) — is specifically accessible for foreigners and can be set up entirely via app.

두 가지 선택 (Two Paths)

선택 1: 카카오뱅크 (Kakao Bank) — 추천 첫 번째 선택

카카오뱅크 (Kakao Bank) is Korea's largest internet-only bank and, for most foreigners, the easiest first bank account to open. It requires no branch visit, no paper forms, and no Korean co-signer.

개설 요건 (Requirements):

  • 외국인등록증 (ARC) — mandatory

  • 스마트폰 (Smartphone) with Korean phone number

  • 카카오톡 (KakaoTalk) app installed

If you have these three things, you can open an account in approximately 10–15 minutes through the Kakao Bank app.

카카오뱅크의 장점 (Advantages):

  • Full Korean-language app (English not fully supported, but widely navigable with translation)

  • Free domestic transfers

  • 카카오페이 (Kakao Pay) integration — Korea's dominant mobile payment system

  • International transfers supported (with limits)

  • Debit card issued — accepted everywhere Visa is accepted internationally

카카오뱅크의 한계 (Limitations):

  • No physical branches — all support is app-based or phone-based

  • Some employers and government agencies prefer accounts at traditional banks

  • International wire transfers have daily limits

선택 2: 4대 은행 (The Big Four Traditional Banks)

Korea's four major commercial banks:

은행 (Bank)

특징 (Notes)

국민은행 (KB Kookmin Bank)

Largest bank by assets; widest branch network

신한은행 (Shinhan Bank)

Strong international services; English support available

우리은행 (Woori Bank)

Major employer bank; good government integration

하나은행 (Hana Bank)

Strong forex services; GLN global payment network

외국인 친화적 순위 (Foreigner accessibility ranking): 신한은행 and 하나은행 have historically been the most foreigner-friendly of the big four — with English-speaking staff at major branches and more streamlined foreigner account opening procedures.

전통 은행 계좌 개설 (Opening a Traditional Bank Account)

Traditional bank account opening requires a branch visit. The process:

준비 서류 (Required documents):

서류 (Document)

비고 (Notes)

여권 (Passport)

Original

외국인등록증 (ARC)

Mandatory

한국 전화번호 (Korean phone number)

Required for OTP authentication

도장 또는 서명 (Seal or signature)

Signature is acceptable; Korean-style seal (도장) not required for foreigners

Note on employment documentation: Some banks may ask for proof of employment or enrollment for new foreign account holders — particularly if you are opening an account without an ARC (which is not recommended; wait until you have your ARC).

개설 과정 (Process):

  1. Visit a branch with your documents

  2. Request a 통장 개설 (account opening)

  3. Complete the application form (staff will assist)

  4. Receive your 통장 (bankbook) and debit card (card arrives by mail within 3–5 business days)

  5. Download the bank's mobile app and register for internet banking

인터넷뱅킹 등록 (Internet banking registration): Korean internet banking requires a 공인인증서 (certificate of authentication) or the newer 금융인증서 (financial certificate). The bank will guide you through this during account setup. Without it, you can only view your balance — not transfer money.

모바일 결제 (Mobile Payment)

Once your account is set up, connecting it to mobile payment systems is straightforward and practically necessary for daily life in Korea.

카카오페이 (Kakao Pay): Linked to Kakao Bank or any major bank account. Used for splitting bills, paying at restaurants and stores, online shopping, and taxi payments. Approximately 4,000만 명 (40 million users) in Korea.

삼성페이 (Samsung Pay): Available on Samsung devices; accepted at virtually all Korean payment terminals through NFC and MST technology.

네이버페이 (Naver Pay): Dominant in online shopping — most Korean e-commerce platforms accept it.

Tip — 토스 (Toss): 토스 (Toss) — operated by 비바리퍼블리카 (Viva Republica) — is Korea's most popular financial super-app. It aggregates accounts from all your banks, enables instant transfers with a simple interface, provides credit score monitoring, and offers investment products. While not a bank itself (though 토스뱅크 / Toss Bank is a separate entity), the Toss app is used by approximately 30 million Koreans for day-to-day money management. Foreigners with ARCs can use Toss to manage multiple accounts in one place.

해외 송금 (International Transfers)

Sending money out of Korea as a foreigner is possible but has regulatory requirements.

주요 송금 옵션 (Main transfer options):

서비스 (Service)

특징 (Notes)

하나은행 GLN

Competitive rates; easy for Hana account holders

신한은행 해외송금

Standard bank wire; good for large amounts

카카오뱅크 해외송금

App-based; competitive rates; daily limits apply

와이어바알리 (Wirebarley)

Fintech remittance; competitive rates for USD, JPY, EUR

센트비 (Sentbe)

Popular among foreign workers; supports many currencies

For regular remittances — monthly transfers of salary home — dedicated fintech services (Wirebarley, Sentbe) typically offer better exchange rates than traditional bank wires.

외환신고 (Foreign exchange reporting): Transfers exceeding $50,000 per transaction require reporting to the 한국은행 (Bank of Korea). Your bank will handle this process, but be aware of the threshold.

신용카드 (Credit Cards)

Debit cards issued with your account are usable everywhere. Credit cards (신용카드) require a Korean credit history — which you don't have when you first arrive. After 6–12 months of banking activity and, in some cases, employment documentation, you may become eligible.

체크카드 vs. 신용카드 (Debit vs. Credit):

  • 체크카드 (Check card / Debit card): Linked directly to your account; immediately available with account opening; widely accepted everywhere in Korea

  • 신용카드 (Credit card): Requires credit approval; offers points/rewards; accepted everywhere

For most daily transactions in Korea — including restaurants, convenience stores, transit, and online shopping — a debit card is fully sufficient.
