Getting Around Korea (대중교통): Subway, Bus, T-Money & KTX

Korea's public transit is fast, cheap, clean, and covers almost everywhere you'd want to go. Here's how to use all of it.

Seoul's subway system moves approximately 7 million passengers per day — making it one of the busiest in the world. Buses arrive on schedule, tracked in real time by an app on your phone. High-speed trains connect Seoul to Busan in 2 hours and 10 minutes. And the entire system — subway, bus, and regional rail — runs on a single rechargeable card that you tap on entry and tap on exit.

Korean public transit is not just functional. It's genuinely excellent. Once you understand how it's organized, getting around becomes one of the easier parts of living here.

교통카드 — T-머니 (T-Money Card)

The foundation of Korean public transit is the T-머니 (T-Money) card — a rechargeable smart card accepted on virtually every form of public transit in Korea: subway, city bus, intercity bus, and some taxis.

구매 장소 (Where to buy):

  • 편의점 (Convenience stores): GS25, CU, 7-Eleven, emart24 — available at the counter; approximately ₩2,500 for the card itself

  • 지하철역 (Subway stations): Vending machines at most stations

충전 방법 (How to recharge):

  • Convenience store counters — tell the staff the amount you want to add

  • Subway station vending machines — cash only

  • T-Money app — link to a Korean bank account for top-up

사용 방법 (How to use): Tap on entry, tap on exit. The fare is automatically deducted. For buses, tap on entry and tap on exit — this is important; failing to tap out results in a higher default fare being charged.

환승 할인 (Transfer discount): One of T-Money's most useful features: if you transfer between subway and bus (or bus to bus) within 30 minutes, the transfer is discounted or free — your total fare is calculated based on the total distance traveled, not each leg separately. This makes multi-leg commutes significantly cheaper.

기본 요금 (Base fares, 2024):

교통수단 (Transit type)

기본 요금 (Base fare)

서울 지하철 (Seoul subway)

₩1,400 (카드 기준)

서울 시내버스 (Seoul city bus)

₩1,300 (카드 기준)

현금 이용 시 (Cash)

₩100–₩200 추가

Tip — 카카오페이·삼성페이로 대체 (Using Kakao Pay or Samsung Pay instead): T-Money functionality is now integrated into 카카오페이 (Kakao Pay) and 삼성페이 (Samsung Pay) — meaning if you have a compatible smartphone, you can use it as a transit card without a physical T-Money card. Tap your phone on the reader the same way you would tap the card. This also works for Apple Pay on compatible iPhones in Korea.

지하철 (Subway)

서울 지하철 (Seoul Subway)

Seoul's subway network has 23 lines and 341 stations — covering the entire metropolitan area from outer suburbs to city center. It operates from approximately 05:30 to 00:30 daily.

공항철도 (AREX)

인천공항 ↔ 서울역 (43분)

내비게이션 (Navigation): 네이버 지도 (Naver Maps) and 카카오맵 (Kakao Maps) both provide turn-by-turn transit directions in English. Google Maps also works in Korea for transit routing — all three will tell you which line to take, where to transfer, and which exit to use.

안내방송 (Announcements): Station announcements are made in Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese on all Seoul Metro lines.

부산·대구·광주·대전 지하철 (Other City Subways)

Korea's other major cities all have subway systems — 부산 (8 lines), 대구 (3 lines), 광주 (1 line), 대전 (1 line), 인천 (2 lines). All accept T-Money.

버스 (Bus)

서울 시내버스 (Seoul City Bus)

Seoul's bus system is color-coded by route type:

색상 (Color)

유형 (Type)

역할 (Function)

파란색 (Blue)

간선버스

Major arterial routes across the city

초록색 (Green)

지선버스

Feeder routes between subway stations and neighborhoods

빨간색 (Red)

광역버스

Express routes between Seoul and outer suburbs

노란색 (Yellow)

순환버스

Circular routes within specific districts

실시간 도착 정보 (Real-time arrival): Every Seoul bus stop has a digital display showing arrival times for upcoming buses. 카카오맵 (Kakao Maps) and 네이버 지도 (Naver Maps) show real-time bus locations and arrival times.

시외버스·고속버스 (Intercity Bus)

For travel between cities, Korea has an extensive intercity bus network — often faster and cheaper than the train for medium distances.

주요 터미널 (Major terminals in Seoul):

  • 서울고속버스터미널 (Seoul Express Bus Terminal): 강남 — routes to southern cities (부산, 광주, 대구)

  • 동서울종합터미널 (East Seoul Terminal): Routes to eastern cities and coast

  • 센트럴시티터미널: 강남 — routes to 광주, 전라도 region

예약: 코버스 (kobus.co.kr) for express buses; 이버스 (ebusticket.co.kr) for intercity buses — both have English interfaces.

KTX — 고속철도 (High-Speed Rail)

KTX (Korea Train Express) is Korea's high-speed rail system — operating at speeds up to 305 km/h on the main lines.

예약 (Booking): Via 코레일 (Korail, letskorail.com) website or app — available in English. Also bookable through 네이버 (Naver) and 카카오 (Kakao) travel platforms. Tickets can be purchased at station vending machines with a foreign credit/debit card.

SRT: A second high-speed operator — SRT (Super Rapid Train) — runs from 수서역 (Suseo Station) in southeastern Seoul to Busan and Mokpo, with fares slightly lower than KTX. Bookable via SRT app or srail.kr.

할인 (Discounts): The 내일로 (Naeillo) pass — a fixed-price unlimited travel pass for a set number of days — is available for foreign visitors (ages 25 and under or student status required for the youth version; an adult version is also available). Useful for extended travel around Korea.

Tip — 좌석 선택 (Seat selection): When booking KTX, choose your seat carefully. Window seats on the right side (서울→부산 방향) get views of the countryside. The 특실 (first class) upgrade costs approximately 40% more but offers significantly wider seats and a quieter cabin — worthwhile for trips over 2 hours.

택시 (Taxi)

Korean taxis are metered, regulated, and generally reliable — though finding one during peak hours and rainy days can require patience.

요금 (Fares, Seoul 2024):

  • 기본요금 (Base fare): ₩4,800 (first 1.6km)

  • 추가요금 (Additional): ₩100 per 131m or per 31 seconds in slow traffic

  • 심야 할증 (Late night surcharge): 20% additional from 22:00–04:00

택시 앱 (Taxi apps):

앱 (App)

특징 (Notes)

카카오T (Kakao T)

Korea's dominant ride-hailing app; English interface; shows estimated fare before booking

우티 (UT, Uber Korea)

Uber-partnered service; familiar interface for international users

타다 (Tada)

Premium vehicle option; fixed pricing

모범택시 (Premium taxi): Black taxis with a 모범택시 (mobeom, model taxi) designation charge higher rates but are generally held to higher service standards. Useful for airport trips with luggage.

언어 장벽 해결 (Solving the language barrier): Show the driver your destination in Korean text — either a saved address in Kakao Maps or a screenshot. Most Korean taxi drivers do not speak English; showing the destination on a map or in Korean text eliminates ambiguity.
