Getting Around Korea (국내 이동): KTX, Buses & Domestic Travel

Korea is smaller than you think. Busan to Seoul is 325km — the same distance as London to Manchester. The KTX does it in two hours and eighteen minutes.

One of the first things foreigners discover about Korea is how easy it is to move around. The infrastructure is dense, reliable, and by global standards, affordable. A country that invested heavily in transportation as part of its economic development strategy now has the dividends: a high-speed rail network connecting major cities, intercity buses departing every 15–30 minutes, and a domestic aviation network for the few places trains don't reach efficiently.

Understanding the options — and which one suits which trip — is the practical foundation of traveling Korea.

KTX — 고속철도 (High-Speed Rail)

KTX (Korea Train eXpress) is the fastest and most convenient way to travel between major cities. Launched in 2004, it connects Seoul to the major population centers with journey times that make domestic flights largely unnecessary on most routes.

예약 방법 (Booking): KORAIL website (letskorail.com) or the Korail Talk app — English interface available. Tickets can be purchased at station kiosks (English option) with no booking fee. Advance booking is recommended for holiday periods and weekends.

좌석 등급 (Seat classes): 일반실 (standard) and 특실 (first class, approximately 40% more expensive). For journeys under 2 hours, standard is entirely comfortable.

Tip — KTX 할인 (KTX Discounts): The Korea Rail Pass (KR Pass) is available for foreign visitors — unlimited travel for 2, 3, 5, or 7 consecutive days. Worth calculating against individual ticket prices for your itinerary. Early bird discounts of up to 30% are available for advance online booking on some routes.

고속버스와 시외버스 (Intercity Buses)

Korea's intercity bus network covers destinations that KTX doesn't reach and is often cheaper for shorter routes.

고속버스 (Express buses): High-speed routes between major cities, departing from 고속버스터미널 (express bus terminals). Seoul's main terminal is 센트럴시티 (Central City) near Express Bus Terminal subway station, and 동서울 (East Seoul) terminal for eastern destinations.

시외버스 (Intercity buses): Cover regional destinations and smaller cities not served by express routes.

요금 (Fares): Generally 30–50% cheaper than KTX on comparable routes. Journey times are longer — Seoul to Busan by bus takes approximately 4–4.5 hours versus 2h 18min by KTX.

예약 (Booking): Bustago app or the terminal ticket counters. Many routes run frequently enough that advance booking is unnecessary outside peak periods.

국내선 항공 (Domestic Flights)

Domestic flights connect Seoul (Gimpo, 김포) to Jeju primarily — by far the world's busiest air route by passenger volume, with over 70,000 passengers daily at peak.

제주 노선 (Jeju routes): Multiple airlines (Korean Air, Asiana, Jeju Air, T'way, Jin Air) run Gimpo–Jeju every 15–20 minutes during peak hours. Flight time: approximately 1 hour. Fares range from ₩30,000–₩120,000 one way depending on advance booking.

For most other domestic destinations, KTX is faster or comparable once airport transit time is included. Busan by plane from Seoul (Gimpo to Gimhae) takes approximately 55 minutes in the air — but total journey time including check-in and transit often exceeds the KTX option.

시내 교통 (City Transportation)

Within cities, the public transport system is uniformly excellent.

지하철 (Subway): Seoul's subway is one of the world's largest and most efficient — 9 main lines plus additional connections, running approximately 05:30–24:00. Signage is in Korean, English, Chinese, and Japanese. Fares start at ₩1,500 (T-money card).

T-money 카드 (T-money Card): A rechargeable transit card usable on subways, buses, and taxis across most of Korea. Available at convenience stores and subway station vending machines. Provides a small discount versus cash fares and eliminates the need for exact change. Essential for any visit longer than a day.

버스 (City buses): Color-coded by route type in Seoul — blue (간선, main arterial), green (지선, feeder), red (광역, regional express), yellow (순환, circular). The T-money card works on all.

택시 (Taxis): Widely available, metered, and relatively affordable by global standards. Base fare approximately ₩4,800. Kakao T app (English available) allows app-based booking and eliminates language barrier issues.

카카오 T (Kakao T): Korea's dominant ride-hailing app — similar to Uber but operated by Kakao. Useful for booking taxis when flagging one proves difficult or when a specific pickup location matters.

렌터카 (Car Rental)

Renting a car makes sense for specific itineraries — rural Gangwon, exploring Jeju's coastline, or reaching destinations not well-served by public transport.

국제운전면허 (International Driving Permit): Required for foreigners driving in Korea. Obtainable in your home country before travel — not issued in Korea to tourists.

내비게이션 (Navigation): Korean road signs are well-maintained and include English transliteration. Naver Maps or Kakao Maps (both have Korean-language navigation; Naver has better English) are more reliable than Google Maps for Korean road routing.

주의 사항 (Cautions): Korean driving culture can be assertive — lane changes, merging, and urban intersections require adjustment. Parking in major cities is expensive and difficult.
