Jeju Island (제주도): Korea's Island Escape

Jeju is technically part of Korea. Culturally, geographically, and atmospherically, it is somewhere else entirely.

제주도 (Jeju Island) sits 90km south of the Korean mainland — a volcanic island the size of a small country (1,846 km²), with its own dialect (제주어, Jeju dialect, now critically endangered), its own mythology, its own food culture, and a landscape that looks nothing like the peninsula to its north. The volcanic cone of 한라산 (Hallasan) dominates the center. The coastline alternates between black lava rock, white sand beaches, and sea cliffs dropping directly into the Pacific. The interior has tangerine orchards, horse farms, and wind.

Koreans call it "Korea's Hawaii." The comparison is reductive but not entirely wrong. It is warmer, slower, and more beautiful than the mainland. And like Hawaii, it has the specific quality of a place that people return to repeatedly without feeling like they've exhausted it.

제주의 구조 (Jeju's Sturcture)

제주는 한라산 (Hallasan, 1,950m) 중심으로 동서 73km, 남북 41km — 렌터카 없이는 효율적으로 돌아보기 어렵습니다.

Jeju is best divided into four coastal areas and the central mountain:

제주시 (Jeju City) — 북쪽 (North): The main city and airport entry point. Most services, accommodation, and transportation hub.

서귀포시 (Seogwipo) — 남쪽 (South): The second city — warmer, calmer, with Jeju's best waterfalls (천지연, 정방), a harbor, and the island's most established resort infrastructure.

동쪽 (East coast): Lava tubes (만장굴), Seongsan Ilchulbong, the most intact traditional villages.

서쪽 (West coast): Hallim Park, Hyeopjae Beach, the 오설록 (Osulloc) tea fields — a distinct, quieter character.

주요 명소 (Key Attractions)

성산일출봉 (Seongsan Ilchulbong):
A tuff cone rising 182m from the sea on Jeju's eastern coast — formed by a volcanic eruption approximately 100,000 years ago. UNESCO World Heritage Site. The crater rim trail (20–30 minutes from the base) is accessible to most fitness levels. The name means "sunrise peak" — and arriving before dawn for the sunrise view across the crater and sea is one of Korea's great natural experiences. Entry ₩5,000.

한라산 (Hallasan National Park):
Korea's highest peak at 1,950m — but the experience is as much about the alpine landscape as the summit. Multiple trails of varying difficulty. The 성판악 (Seongpanak) trail to the summit (9.6km one way) requires advance reservation and an early start. The shorter 어리목 (Eorimok) and 영실 (Yeongsil) trails are accessible without reservation and offer extraordinary sub-alpine scenery.

만장굴 (Manjanggul Lava Tube):
One of the world's longest lava tube cave systems — accessible to visitors for approximately 1km of its total 7.4km length. The interior is cool (year-round 11°C), dramatic, and unlike any other landscape in Korea. UNESCO World Heritage Site. Entry ₩4,000.

우도 (Udo Island):
A small island accessible by ferry (15 minutes) from Seongsan Pier — characterized by white coral sand beaches, grazing cattle on the clifftops, and a peaceful small-island atmosphere. Bicycle rental (₩5,000–₩10,000/hour) is the primary transport. The 땅콩 아이스크림 (peanut ice cream) sold throughout the island has become its unofficial mascot.

오설록 티 뮤지엄 (Osulloc Tea Museum):
Korea's premier green tea producer and the only tea museum in Korea — set within working tea fields on Jeju's west coast. The distinctive green-on-black landscape of the tea terraces has become one of Jeju's most photographed images. Free entry to the museum and fields; the adjacent Innisfree Jeju House is a tea-themed café.

제주의 음식 (Food in Jeju)

Jeju's food culture is distinct from the mainland — the island's isolation historically produced ingredients and dishes unavailable elsewhere.

제주 흑돼지 (Jeju Black Pork):
Jeju's indigenous black pig — smaller than mainland breeds, slower-growing, with a distinctive flavor. 흑돼지 삼겹살 (black pork belly, grilled) is the island's signature meat dish. Restaurants in 제주시 흑돼지 거리 (Jeju Black Pork Street) specialize in nothing else.

옥돔 (Okdom, Red Tilefish):
Jeju's signature fish — dried and grilled, often served in 옥돔 구이 정식 (grilled tilefish set meals). A Jeju flavor that doesn't exist on the mainland.

전복 (Abalone):
Jeju's haenyeo (해녀, female divers) have harvested abalone for centuries. 전복죽 (jeonbok juk, abalone porridge), 전복 구이 (grilled abalone), and 전복 회 (raw abalone) are all available near coastal villages.

감귤 (Gamgyul, Jeju Tangerines):
Jeju's dominant agricultural product — the volcanic soil produces a tangerine with a specific sweetness unavailable on the mainland. In season (November–January), they are sold from roadside stalls for ₩3,000–₩5,000 per kilogram.

해녀 문화 (Haenyeo Culture)

제주의 해녀 (Jeju haenyeo) — female divers who harvest seafood by breath-holding to depths of 10–20 meters — are one of Korea's most distinctive cultural traditions. UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage since 2016.

At their peak in the mid-20th century, there were approximately 30,000 haenyeo. Today approximately 3,500 remain, the majority over age 60. The tradition is endangered but alive — and watching a haenyeo demonstration at 성산 or 우도 coastal areas, or buying seafood directly from the haenyeo bulteok (불턱, their traditional gathering space) is an experience with genuine depth.

Tip — 렌터카 필수 (Car Rental is Essential): Unlike Seoul or even Busan, Jeju is effectively impossible to explore efficiently without a car. Public buses exist but are infrequent and slow — the transit time between major sights by bus makes a day feel very short. Car rental from Jeju Airport is straightforward (from ₩30,000/day), international licenses are accepted, and road navigation with Kakao Maps works well. This is the one Korean destination where the car rental investment is not optional.

교통 (Getting There)

항공편 (By Air): Gimpo (Seoul) to Jeju — approximately 1 hour; departures every 15–20 minutes during peak hours; fares from ₩30,000 one way booked in advance. The world's busiest air route by passenger volume.

배편 (By Ferry): Mokpo (목포), Wando (완도), and several port cities offer overnight ferries to Jeju — approximately 12 hours. More scenic, considerably slower, and cheaper. Worth considering as one leg of a southern Korea itinerary.
