웹툰 (webtoon) is a format that emerged in Korea in the early 2000s and has since become one of the most significant developments in global 만화 (comic) culture. A webtoon is a digital comic designed for 세로 스크롤 (vertical scrolling) on a smartphone — fundamentally different in structure from traditional manga or Western comics, which are formatted for horizontal page turns. The vertical scroll format changes everything: pacing, composition, color use, and how tension is built. A webtoon creator can make you hold your breath just by making you scroll.

웹툰의 탄생 (Birth of the Webtoon)

The webtoon format emerged from a specific Korean digital environment: the combination of high internet penetration, 피씨방 (PC bang) culture, and the early dominance of 네이버 (Naver) as Korea's primary internet portal.

네이버 웹툰 (Naver Webtoon) — now simply Webtoon globally — launched in 2004 as a platform for amateur creators to publish comics online. The early system was open: anyone could upload. Readers could comment and rate. Algorithms and editorial teams identified popular works and promoted them. The best creators were recruited into paid serialization contracts.

카카오 웹툰 (Kakao Webtoon) — originally 다음 만화세상 (Daum Manhwa World) — developed in parallel, eventually merging into the Kakao platform's webtoon service.

The open platform model meant that webtoon success was driven by reader response more than editorial judgment — producing a feedback loop between creators and audiences that has no equivalent in traditional publishing.

웹툰의 특징 (What Makes Webtoons Distinct)

세로 스크롤 구성 (Vertical scroll composition): Traditional manga and comics are composed for a two-page spread or single page. Webtoon creators compose for a continuous vertical strip, often very long. Key moments are placed at scroll-points where the reader naturally pauses — creating 클리프행어 (cliffhanger) beats that feel different from page-turn cliffhangers.

풀 컬러 (Full color): Most webtoons are in full color — unlike manga, which is traditionally black and white. Color is used for emotion, atmosphere, and visual differentiation in ways manga cannot.

에피소드 구조 (Episode structure): Webtoons are serialized in 회차 (episodes), typically released once per week on a set day. Regular readers subscribe to series and receive updates — similar to a weekly drama schedule.

무료·유료 혼합 (Freemium model): Most webtoon platforms operate on a 부분 유료화 (freemium) model. Recent episodes are locked behind 코인 (coin, virtual currency) payments; older episodes become free after a waiting period. This creates a balance between reader accessibility and monetization.

주요 장르 (Major Genres)

Webtoons cover virtually every genre, with certain styles dominating readership:

장르 (Genre)

특징 (Character)

대표작 (Examples)

로맨스 (Romance)

Female-skewing readership; emotion-driven narrative

여신강림 (True Beauty), 사내맞선 (Business Proposal)

스릴러·미스터리 (Thriller)

Fast pacing; cliffhanger structure

살인자의 쇼핑몰, 경이로운 소문 (Uncanny Counter)

판타지 (Fantasy)

Korean-style fantasy — 이세계 (isekai), 회귀 (regression), hunter narratives

나혼자만 레벨업 (Solo Leveling)

일상·감성 (Slice of Life)

Empathy-driven; coming-of-age

유미의 세포들 (Yumi's Cells)

공포·호러 (Horror)

Korean-style supernatural and monster narratives

스위트홈 (Sweet Home), 지금 우리 학교는 (All of Us Are Dead)

웹툰에서 K-드라마로 (Webtoon to K-Drama Pipeline)

The biggest cultural impact of webtoons is their role as a source of IP for K-Drama and K-Film.

Major K-Dramas adapted from webtoons:

  • 이태원 클라쓰 (Itaewon Class) — JTBC 2020, Netflix distribution

  • 스위트홈 (Sweet Home) — Netflix 2020

  • 유미의 세포들 (Yumi's Cells) — tvN 2021

  • 지금 우리 학교는 (All of Us Are Dead) — Netflix 2022

  • 사내맞선 (Business Proposal) — SBS 2022

  • 경이로운 소문 (Uncanny Counter) — OCN 2020

The pipeline runs both ways: when a webtoon is adapted into a drama, the original webtoon's readership spikes dramatically — and the drama's success pulls global users toward the source platform.

글로벌 웹툰 (Webtoon Goes Global)

네이버 웹툰 (Naver Webtoon) — now operating globally as simply Webtoon — launched its English-language service in 2014. Current global monthly users exceed 85 million, with service in more than 100 countries across English, Spanish, French, Thai, and other languages.

Non-Korean creators are finding success on the platform — signaling a shift from Korean content distribution channel to global comics platform. Kakao's webtoon and web novel platforms 타파스 (Tapas) and 래디쉬 (Radish) have made direct moves into English-language markets.

Tip — 웹툰 읽는 방법 (How to Read Webtoons): In Korea, the standard apps are 네이버 웹툰 (Naver Webtoon) and 카카오 웹툰 (Kakao Webtoon). Outside Korea, the Webtoon app (English) or Tapas are the accessible entry points. Most ongoing series update on a specific day each week — use the in-app subscription feature to get notified.
